Adaptability: Adjust and Keep Moving
Adaptability is the ability to adjust your thoughts, actions, or approach when circumstances, plans, or environments change.
Definition of the Word
Adaptability is the quality of being able to adjust successfully to new conditions or circumstances.
Practical Lesson
Life does not always happen the way we planned. Unexpected changes, delays, disappointments, and new responsibilities can quickly change the direction we thought we were going.
When things change, we may become frustrated because we were comfortable with the way things were. However, refusing to adjust can cause us to remain stuck in a situation that has already changed.
Adaptability does not mean giving up on your goals. It means being willing to change your approach so that you can continue moving forward.
Practical Application
Think about one area of your life that has not gone according to plan. Ask yourself whether you are holding on to a routine, method, or expectation that is no longer helping you.
Identify one adjustment you can make today. It may involve changing your schedule, asking for help, learning something new, or approaching the situation with a different mindset.
Making an adjustment does not mean that you have failed. Sometimes changing your approach is exactly what you need to make progress.
Spiritual Application
There will be times when God leads us in a direction that we did not expect. A door may close, a plan may change, or we may find ourselves in an unfamiliar season.
In those moments, we must be willing to trust God and follow His direction. We should never adapt by compromising God’s Word or our faith. However, we must remain open to the different ways God may choose to work in our lives.
Spiritual adaptability means trusting that even when the plan changes, God is still leading us.
Scripture
“Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?”
Isaiah 43:18–19a ESV
Carry This With You
A change in the plan does not mean that your purpose has been lost. Sometimes you must change your approach, release what is familiar, and trust God with the new direction. Adjust and keep moving. God can still lead you forward, even when the route changes.
Prayer
Father, thank You for remaining faithful even when my circumstances change. Help me not to become discouraged when things do not happen according to my plans. Give me the wisdom to recognize when I need to make an adjustment and the courage to move forward in a new direction. Help me release what I cannot control and trust that You are still guiding my steps. Keep me grounded in Your Word and help me remain open to the way You are leading me. Strengthen my faith and help me to adjust and keep moving. In Jesus’ name, amen.
