Humility: Be Humble

Humility keeps confidence from becoming arrogance and helps us maintain the right posture of the heart.

Definition of the Word

Humility is freedom from pride or arrogance; it is the quality or state of being humble.

Practical Lesson

Being confident is one thing, and I believe confidence is great. However, there is a thin line between confidence and arrogance, and that thin line is determined by the posture of the heart.

It is easy to become high-minded when everything is working out perfectly, but it is important to understand that things can change.

This is where humility comes into play. Humility provides the balance you need to prevent you from thinking too highly of yourself.

Have confidence in your abilities and celebrate your achievements, but remember that remaining humble may be the very quality that helps you maintain your success without losing focus.

Practical Application

Practice humility by remembering that you do not have to prove that you are better than anyone else. Be willing to listen, receive correction, admit when you are wrong, and give others credit for their contributions.

You can be proud of how far you have come without looking down on someone who may still be finding their way.

Allow your confidence to speak through your character instead of constantly announcing your accomplishments.

Spiritual Application

True humility begins when we recognize that everything we have and everything we are able to accomplish is because of God’s grace. Our gifts, opportunities, wisdom, and strength ultimately come from Him.

Jesus demonstrated humility by serving others and placing their needs before His own. As followers of Christ, we should have that same heart.

We should not seek attention or recognition for everything we do. Instead, we should serve faithfully, honor others, and allow God to lift us up in His timing.

Carry This With You

Confidence says, “I am capable.” Arrogance says, “I am better than everyone else.” Humility says, “I am grateful for what God has given me, and I will use it to help others.”

Be confident, but remain teachable. Celebrate your accomplishments, but never forget the people who helped you along the way.

Stay humble enough to know that every good thing in your life is a gift from God.

Prayer

Father, thank You for every gift, ability, opportunity, and accomplishment You have given me. Help me to remain humble and never allow pride or arrogance to take root in my heart.

Teach me to honor others, receive correction, and serve without always seeking recognition. Give me confidence without conceit and strength without pride. Help me to follow the example of Jesus and always remember that everything I have comes from You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
