Joy: Choose It Daily

Joy is a deep sense of gladness and contentment that is not completely dependent on what is happening around you.

Definition of the Word

Joy is a feeling of great happiness, pleasure, or delight.

Practical Lesson

It is easy to feel joyful when life is going well. However, when we face stress, disappointment, pressure, or uncertainty, joy can seem difficult to hold on to.

Joy does not mean pretending that problems do not exist. It means choosing not to allow those problems to take away every good thing in your life. There can still be something to appreciate, enjoy, or look forward to even during a difficult season.

When we focus only on what is wrong, we may overlook the small moments that can bring peace and encouragement.

Practical Application

Take time this week to notice the things that bring joy into your life. It may be spending time with family, listening to music, taking a walk, laughing with a friend, or simply having a quiet moment.

Write down at least one thing each day that made you smile or gave you peace. Do not wait for everything to become perfect before allowing yourself to experience joy. Make room for it in your daily routine and protect it from unnecessary negativity.

Spiritual Application

True joy comes from knowing that God is with us in every season. Our circumstances may change, but God’s love, faithfulness, and promises remain the same.

We can still have joy during difficult moments because our hope is not based only on what we see. It is based on who God is. Spiritual joy does not ignore pain, but it reminds us that pain is not the end of the story.

When we spend time in God’s presence and remember His goodness, He can renew our strength and restore our joy.

Scripture

“You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy.”

Psalm 16:11a ESV

Carry This With You

Joy does not require a perfect life. It begins when you recognize the good that is still present and trust God with what is not. Do not allow one difficult moment to take away the joy available to you today. Choose joy, protect it, and allow it to strengthen you.

Prayer

Father, thank You for being the source of my joy. Help me not to allow difficult circumstances, disappointments, or negative thoughts to control my outlook. Open my eyes to the good things You have placed around me each day. Teach me to find joy in Your presence and to trust You even when life does not go according to my plans. Restore the joy that stress, fear, or discouragement may have taken from me. Help me choose joy daily and share that joy with others. In Jesus’ name, amen.
